Jewellery Care
DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER!
As the song says and we aint arguing with Shirley. However precious metals, gemstones and even diamonds can be damaged or lose a little of their vibrancy through wear.
By following the simple steps set out below you will be able to protect your jewellery, clean it at home and breathe new life into an old treasured piece.
Tips for caring for your jewellery
Remove all jewellery especially rings before taking part in physical activity be it sport, gardening or manual jobs. This avoids any unnecessary damage and surfaces scratches
Also remove jewellery before household chores, to avoid contact with cleaning products that contain bleach or other harsh chemicals which can discolour metals and some stones such as emeralds. For the same reason always take jewellery off before swimming.
Cosmetics and perfumes can also react with jewellery causing the metals surface to discolour or tarnish. We advise applying beauty products before you put your jewellery on
Store your jewels in a jewellery box with separate compartments for each piece to avoid scratches and chains becoming tangled..
A good tip is to store silver jewellery in air tight zip lock plastic bags, exposure to air can cause silver to tarnish
Cleaning Jewellery
Once in a while use a specialist jewellery polishing cloth which is impregnated with a polishing compound. A rub with a jewellery polishing cloth will remove light tarnishing.
Cleaning an Engagement ring
Engagement rings and other jewellery set with gemstones can collect daily grime underneath the stone and in-between the setting, dulling the sparkle of the gems. To clean, leave the ring in a bowl of warm water, with dishwashing liquid for a few minutes to loosen the build up of dirt. With a soft toothbrush gently brush the ring, paying special attention to the backs of stone settings. Refresh the warm water and leave for a little longer if needed. Once clean, dry with a jewellery polishing cloth.
Please be aware not all gemstones can be cleaned this way, delicate stones such as emerald and opals should be cleaned professionally. Check your gemstone can get wet before cleaning.
When cleaning your jewellery take a little extra time to check over any stone settings, links and catches for wear and tear. Identifying worn areas early may prevent more serious damage or even loss further down the line.
